Urban Ecology Australia

Urban Ecology Australia is committed to the transforming of human settlements into EcoCities - vibrant, equitable, ecologically sustaining and economically viable communities. Incorporated in December 1991, UEA is a United Nations accredited, non-profit, non-government, educational association, based in Adelaide, South Australia. UEA membership is open to anyone with a genuine interest in ecological cities. Its members include individuals, businesses and other community groups, who contribute via membership fees, donations, and unpaid work.

Donations

As a non-profit association, donations from supporters can increase the scope of the work we do.

People

UEA relies on volunteer contributions. Many people have contributed of time and expertise to Urban Ecology Australia, to help make ecocities happen.

Board

Urban Ecology Australia is run by an elected board of four to eight members. UEA aims to achieve an even gender and age balance of its board members.

Interns

UEA has had an international internship program since 1994 - attracting many interns from a variety of countries.

Christie Walk

Urban Ecology Australia initiated the development of Christie Walk as a practical model of how sustainable practices can be introduced in an inner-city context, right now!

Activities

• Tours of Christie Walk. 

• Independent information, referral and advisory services for business, industry and government and the general public. 

• Short courses for schools, community groups and professional organisations. 
• Lobbying for attitudes and policy change at all levels of government and industry. 
• Community participation program. 
• Ecological regeneration projects through urban/rural links. 

• Campaigns for renewable energy, bioregional planning, traffic free environments, and ecological development generally. 

• GreenMapping.
• Consultancy work.

Objectives

The goals of Urban Ecology Australia are set out in the Rules of the Association.

• To educate, inform and facilitate the exchange of information about the evolution of ecologically integrated human settlement through conferences, lectures, published papers, newsletters, participation in expositions and fairs, maintaining a library, and through other appropriate means;

• To sponsor, undertake and encourage research to be carried out in relation to the evolution of ecologically integrated human settlement.

• To provide an independent, community-based focus for co-ordinating and advocating action to transform existing human settlements in the direction of ecological integration, health, and social vitality and equity;

• To participate in building new ecologically integrated, healthy, socially vital and equitable new human settlements.
